YWCA Quad Cities provides free Thanksgiving meal kits to families in need

This holiday season, we were able to help close to 200 families!

On Monday, November 25th, volunteers put together Thanksgiving meal kits at the YWCA’s Empowerment Center.

They had 185 meal kits to package! Each meal kit included meal essentials and a $20 Fareway voucher for a turkey or ham. Thanks to TYSON Foods and donors, we were able to provide the kits to families in need.

“It’s important to provide a good holiday to everyone in our community and be able to provide good memories for them,” said Amy Schaefer, Executive Director of the Empowerment Center.

This is the fourth year the YWCA has done meal kits but this year the need was gigantic. In years passed, the YWCA might have gotten just over 100 applicants. Schaefer says on the first day the application opened there were more than 400 applications.

“There was a gigantic jump in need which we were not expecting so we are really just thankful for everyone who stepped up to help out so we could provide even more meal kits to families in need, ” said Schaefer.

The YWCA is also very grateful for all the volunteers who helped put together the meal kits and distribute them!

The meal recipients who were selected will pick up the meal kits on Tuesday, November 26th.
